Spokane is building toward a connected 27-mile bicycle network by 2027. This construction season brought new signs, speed bumps and crossings to areas including the South Hill, downtown and West Central. The work is intended to link existing bike lanes into routes with fewer stressful gaps and clearer safety features.

On the South Hill, Hatch Street and 25th Avenue received signs and pavement markings for cyclists. North of the Spokane River, crossings were added on Elm Street at Maxwell, Boone and Northwest Boulevard. Other planned features include channelizers on busier roads and shorter intersection crossings. City transportation and sustainability director Jon Snyder said the changes can help reduce speeding on long, straight streets that are not major arterials.

The project is meant to make biking more comfortable for people traveling to destinations around Spokane, including commuters and families. More of the connected route system is expected to be completed next year, with roundabouts planned at key locations to slow vehicle traffic. Residents can follow progress and weigh in on other local transportation improvements through the regional transportation council and the city website. The city hopes people will use the improved routes during the fall weather.
